Before and After

How I lost 20 pounds

Let me start with saying that I am by no means a medical professional. If you are considering changing your diet and lifestyle, please do your research and talk with your doctor. Any diet/lifestyle change should always be discussed with a doctor or nutritionist first. I’ve tried all kinds of diets but was never able to sustain any of them in the long run until I stumbled upon Intermittent fasting thanks to my sister-in-law who introduced me to this way of living. By adopting Intermittent Fasting in combination with a low-carb diet, I was able to shred the excess pounds and maintain the weight loss since then.

What is Intermittent fasting?

Essentially, Intermittent fasting consists of an eating pattern in which one cycles between periods of eating and fasting. This method of weight loss concentrates more on when to eat rather than what to eat.

Intermittent fasting is the ancient secret of health. It is ancient because it has been practiced throughout all of human history yet a secret because this powerful habit has been virtually forgotten.

However, now many people are re-discovering this dietary intervention. It has huge benefits if it is done right. For example weight loss, increased energy, reversal of type 2 diabetes. Plus, you’ll save time and money from having to do less groceries and cooking.

How does intermittent fasting work?

Fasting basically allows the body to burn off excess body fat. It is important to acknowledge that this is normal as humans have evolved to fast without detrimental health consequences. Body fat is basically food energy that has been stored away. If you don’t eat, your body will burn its own fat for energy.

Different ways to fast

There are different ways to fast. I followed a 18: 6 eating window. This involves daily fasting for 18 hours with a 6-hour eating ‘window’. So I ate 2 meals between 10 am and 4 pm.

Who should NOT fast?

You should not fast under the following conditions:

  • Underweight (BMI < 18.5)
  • Pregnant
  • Breastfeeding
  • A child under 18

Low carb Diet

A low-carb diet is low in carbohydrates, primarily found in sugary foods, pasta and bread. Instead, you eat more wholesome foods including protein, natural fats and vegetables. Studies show that a low-carb diet can result in weight loss as well as improved health markers.

The basics of a low carb diet

  • Eat: Meat, fish, eggs, vegetables grown above ground and good natural fats that come from coconut oil, olive oil, and avocados.
  • Avoid: Sugar and starchy foods like bread, pasta, rice, beans and potatoes
